Donald Trump needs to keep Republican senators on his side as the likelihood of a Senate impeachment trial looms, but for some Republicans, being too firmly on Trump’s side could be a liability in 2020. Trump’s answer is straightforward: He’s raising money for those who carry his water.
On Wednesday, the Trump campaign sent out a fundraising email for Trump himself and Sens. Cory Gardner of Colorado, Joni Ernst of Iowa, and Thom Tillis of North Carolina. Gardner in particular is considered vulnerable in 2020, but all three signed on to Sen. Lindsey Graham’s resolution screaming about how unfair it is that Trump might actually have to answer for his abuses. “If we don’t post strong fundraising numbers, we won't be able to defend the President from this baseless Impeachment WITCH HUNT,” the fundraising message threatened. Next week, Trump is holding a fundraiser for Georgia Sen. David Perdue, and he’ll appear at a reception for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s super PAC, the Senate Leadership Fund.
Senators like Gardner, Ernst, and Tillis may suffer with some voters for tying themselves so strongly to Trump in the middle of impeachment, but they sure will have the money to try to win those voters back.
Let's take back the Senate in 2020. Can you give $1 to the Democratic nominee fund in each of these key states?
