Moscow Mitch McConnell has emerged from his shell to clarify his intentions on Donald Trump's impeachment, and boy did he pick a doozy of a day to do it. In a campaign video released on Facebook (where all the liars go with their political ads) McConnell attacks Democrats and promises more obstruction, this time to protect Trump.
"Nancy Pelosi is in the clutches of a left-wing mob," McConnell says into the camera. "They've finally convinced her to impeach the president. All of you know your Constitution. The way that impeachment stops is a Senate majority, with me as majority leader." The only way to make it happen, of course, is to send him money. "But I need your help," he adds. "Please contribute before the deadline."
McConnell made his decision even before Speaker Pelosi had made it official, declaring that the phone call at the heart of the issue, in which Trump tries to strong-arm a foreign president into interfering in the 2020 election, was nothing. Democrats had "overplayed their hand," he said, and impeaching Trump over it was "laughable." To date, he hasn't commented on the whistleblower complaint that reiterates the call. But he has tried to throw dust in our eyes, saying that he would "support the established proper procedures" and would have to take up the impeachment articles passed by the House. Now he's made it crystal clear that he's made up his mind—he'll take it up and stop it immediately.
He did this on the very day that the entire scheme of Ukraine extortion and election interference were revealed in the text messages and phone calls between former special envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker, a career foreign service officer, U. S. Charge d’Affaires William Taylor, and Trump’s ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, a wealthy hotelier and real estate magnate who got the job by having been a big Trump donor. The communications make it as clear as day that there was a coordinated effort—largely run by Giuliani of all people—to pressure Ukraine by withholding aid into manufacturing dirt on a political rival and to muddy the waters on Russia's 2016 election interference. McConnell also chose to declare fealty to Trump over the constitution on the day Trump tried to enlist China in 2020 election interference, on national television from the White House lawn.
McConnell will do anything to retain power, up to and including setting the constitution on fire. The only way to stop him is a revolt from enough of his members to deny him a majority vote. The only way to do that is to threaten their jobs. That means amassing huge war chests for their Democratic opponents in 2020. Particularly McConnell's.
