DK readers are aware of the threat to democracy posed by electronic voting machines. We have all been aware of this threat since the early 2000’s. Much has changed since then, but this threat remains. With alarming regularity, we see stories in the news which demonstrate quite clearly that this critical issue has not been adequately addressed. Incredibly, there are 13 states where there is still no paper trail required at all.
The SAFE Act which passed the House in June would address many issues, including mandating risk-limiting audits (RLAs). Unfortunately, although it has passed the House, McConnell blocking any progress in the Senate is far from unlikely.
That said, we can still take action at the state level to try to secure our votes. One of the best ways to do this is to push for RLAs. Rhode Island has already taken action and will require these beginning with the primary next year. Michigan, Illinois and several other states are working on implementing these as well.
Unless you live in a state where these are already in place (not many of us), please please please reach out to your State Board of Elections and state representatives to support these initiatives. More than once if you can. Let them know how important it is, and follow up. And please also reach out to your friends, loved ones, politically-minded acquaintances, etc. to raise awareness as well.
Thanks for reading.
