This is peak gaslighting. The hosts of Fox & Friends invited House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to embrace the Republican talking point that Donald Trump wasn’t serious—was “just trolling”—when he asked China to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, but McCarthy went further. He said, with a straight face, “You watch what the president said—he’s not saying China should investigate.”
As a reminder, Trump's exact words, to reporters, on camera, were, “Likewise, China should start an investigation into the Bidens.”
McCarthy didn’t even have an explanation for how he could claim that Trump didn’t say the thing Trump said. He didn’t try to parse words; he just said Trump did not say the thing he said, and then pivoted to insist that someone should investigate Biden.
We are rapidly exhausting all the words for describing this level of blatant dishonesty.
