As we begin to hear publicly from career U.S. diplomats in the House impeachment hearings into Donald Trump, it would seem our precious democracy is crumbling before our very eyes. A whistleblower complaint filed in August has been thoroughly and completely corroborated by numerous officials at the center of the scandal. These officials initially testified in closed-door House hearings, and now, one by one, they will raise their right hands and swear to tell the truth and nothing but the truth in public congressional hearings for all the world to see.
Although some in the media described the first day of testimony as "Consequential, but dull," a new significant detail came to light—a State Department staffer who worked with Ambassador Bill Taylor had overheard Ambassador Gordon Sondland talking directly to Donald Trump on the phone, updating the president on progress toward Ukraine announcing an investigation into Joe and Hunter Biden. Only hours after Taylor relayed this new information, a second State Department official came forward to say they also overheard the conversation in Kyiv.
In short, evidence is mounting that Donald Trump abused his power by withholding critical aid to Ukraine, aid that was appropriated by Congress in part to protect U.S. interests. Thus far, Republicans and Donald Trump haven’t produced a single bit of evidence, not a single witness, in defense of Trump’s actions. Asked at a press conference on Thursday morning whether Democrats had already made up their minds on impeachment, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the purpose of the hearings was to determine the facts and get to the truth. She said that the outcome was not yet decided and that she welcomed Trump to present any evidence to the House that would be exculpatory.
