Lindsey Graham gave a speech that included:
Graham stressed that America’s interest in the Middle East and its security and stability is considered an integral part of the US security strategy, as the spread of terrorism in the region would eventually reach his country.
“Those people want to kill you first, then they will come to us,” he said, describing extremists in some parts of the Middle East.
He also asked the Gulf countries to overcome their differences as it is time to look forward to address issues critical to their progress. He said the US cannot fix everybody’s problems and people have to take part in their own affairs and work out solutions that benefit them.
Meanwhile, he praised American co-operation with Turkey in Syria for being productive and yielding positive results on the ground. He described Turkey as a key player in Syria.
Graham talked about the various issues concerning American policies, whether inside the US or in various parts of the world with a focus on the region. He stressed the importance of education, empowering women and economic development to combat terrorism and radicalism other than military action. www.gulf-times.com/...

US China session hosted by https://www.wiltonpark.org.uk Wilton Park
The current international system was established based on a combination of rules, derived from international law, and balance of power underpinned by the United States. With China’s rise, the United States’ relative decline, and the increasing rivalry and confrontation between the two, the international balance of power has become considerably more fluid and unstable. Overall, the rules-based system has benefited small, medium and emerging powers most in providing them with some protection from the perceived hegemonic tendencies of the great powers. Yet the rules-based international system consequently appears to be in a considerable state of flux and strain, with different states having different and often conflicting goals with regard to how the system should evolve. This session will explore
- How are the international policies of the US, China and other key powers likely to evolve in coming years?
- What impact would a systemic US-China confrontation have on critical global agendas for trade norms, energy production, and management of and climate change?
- Could small and medium size states act collectively to exert greater influence on the future evolution of international rules and institutions?
- Will the China-Russia strategic relationship continue to deepen, and if so what is its potential impact on global geopolitics and the future of the rules-based international system ?
