Welcome to what is the 813th original profile here at “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day” profile, where we’ll be discussing Steve Baleshiski, who was a candidate for District 30 of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 2018. Baleshiski, a 22 year old college student, was hoping to knock off the sitting Democratic House Speaker of the Connecticut House, Joe Aresimowicz, who was aiming for his eighth term in the legislature. At first, Baleshiski had all the support one could hope for from the Connecticut Republican Party, who were going all in on attacking Aresimowicz for “creating more tolls on roads”, and it seemed like they might be able to push the young upstart to an upset win.
But alas, Baleshiski loves guns enough to void all sympathy, and he responded to David Hogg, who survived the Parkland shooting by getting on his Facebook page and saying Hogg should “burn in Hell”:
”I’m not supposed to speak ill off David Hogg because he’s a ‘survivor’. Apparently if you’ve survived horrific events, that makes the stupidity spewing out of your mouth above reproach. I disagree. David Hogg can burn in hell, I don’t care what he survived. Survivors who wage war on my country are my enemies.”
Now, all this did was draw attention to Steve Baleshiski’s social media accounts, where people began to realize he had some monstrous views, and he openly literally demonized people who disagreed with him and admitted to being full of hate:
“You’re (expletive) right I’m full of hate. What emotion do you expect me to feel for people who are trying to destroy my country and impose their sick, dystopian will on me and my family? Do you expect me to sit here ‘sure we disagree, but we’re all fellow Americans?’ Well that’s not how I feel. The people trying to destroy the country I love and impose 1984 meets Brave New World meets the will of Satan on my family are my enemies. I could pretend to be a white knight and say that I don’t hate them but that would be a lie. I hate them.”
In other posts, he was also dismissive of climate change, bigoted towards Muslims by saying they “worshipping the Devil”, and advocated for shooting and killing looters during national disasters:
”Can emergency personnel just shoot looters? I know about due process, but when you see them stepping through shattered glass doors with arms full of stolen crap, their guilt is not in question. One natural disaster where we shoot all the looters and we’ll see how much looting there is in the next natural disaster.”
Baleshiski ended up dropping out of the race on October 11th, 2018. Baleshiski’s replacement, Michael Gagliardi, ended up losing to Joe Aresimowicz by 50 votes, but that’s not a surprise, given he had only a month to campaign.
