There’s a diary on the Rec List with the misleading title:
Biden floats the idea of picking a Republican running mate
That’s just bullshit. Biden didn’t float anything. He was asked a stupid question and he gave a stupid answer. And of course he wouldn’t pick a GOP running mate. To think he would seriously consider it also is stupid.
Biden’s best response would have been to ask why Republicans are never asked if they’d pick a Democratic running mate. His best response would have included pointing out that the media always expect Democrats to reach across the aisle— or chasm— to create unity, or else they’re called divisive, while at the same time the same media routinely laud Republicans for chasing every extreme, because they’re being true to themselves.
The media have a debased double standard, and it’s a big part of how we got Trump. That’s what the question was about, and that should have defined Biden’s response. His was dumb. And I expect he’ll soon clean it up. Because that tends to be how he does things: He makes a gaffe, he cleans it up. My biggest complaint with Biden is that he’s just not very smart. He never was very smart. He’s not stupid and unhinged like so many leading Republicans, but he’s not very smart.
To be clear: I’m not planning on voting for Biden in the primaries, but I’ll have no problem voting for him if he’s the Democratic nominee. But don’t try to make this latest dumb moment into something it wasn’t. Biden didn’t float anything, and to claim he did is, at best, false.
