This afternoon, the Senate passed the spending bill 83-16.
This evening, the House passed the spending bill 300-128.
Those are veto-proof majorities, so it no longer matters if Trump even signs the bill. He can’t stop it from going into effect.
Will he still try to declare a national emergency (because in TrumpWorld, “I didn’t get my way!!! WAHHHHH!!!!” is an emergency)? Possibly. But my understanding is that McConnell got Trump to agree to sign it by agreeing that after signature, Trump could then declare his emergency.
Now, we don’t need his written-in-Sharpie-marker signature. He’s irrelevant. He doesn’t matter at all.
So watch him back down from his emergency declaration (or hear from McConnell that it’s a no-go, and he better not try it). And if he still tries to declare it, we’ll hit him with so many lawsuits he’ll never claw his way out from under them.
Pass the popcorn.
