William Southold - The Southold Report
Axios is known for their “One Big Thing” every day, and today I have mine, and it’s the question above. Now that President Trump has declared what many are calling an unprecedented national emergency in order to build his border wall, and given that Speaker Pelosi and many others have suggested that there are any number of national emergencies a Democratic President could feasibly declare, would this game changer by Trump be enough to coax Al Gore off the sidelines and run for President in 2020?
Former Vice President Gore, in citing the 2018 U.N. report that said if the world didn’t drastically reduce its carbon emissions the consequences will become dire, has already declared this issue a “global emergency”.
So isn’t now the perfect time for Mr. Gore to run for President of The United States?
Given his mastery of the field and his dedication to it, wouldn’t Mr. Gore be the perfect one to declare a national emergency to deal with his signature issue - climate change?
And given that many believe Mr. Gore was unjustly denied the presidency in 2000 by a few hanging chads and a wrongly decided Supreme Court decision, isn’t this the perfect time to ask Mr. Gore these questions?
I do not claim to be a “buddy” of Mr. Gore, although on that 2000 campaign trail and a few times after, he and I have shared some Tennessee sipping whisky at the quiet end of several bars around the country. I saw that that change.org is offering a petition to encourage Mr. Gore to run, but when I checked this morning it has garnered less than 3000 signees. I have recently reached out to him via phone call, text, and email. I have not as yet heard back. So I have one last question, let’s call it a plea.
Would someone who knows Mr. Gore better than I do, perhaps someone, say, high up in the Democratic Party, please seek an answer from Mr. Gore?
To be sure, there are many exciting Democratic presidential candidates who have announced or are about to announce a run in 2020. For my money, the possibilities of a Gore/Trump matchup, perhaps the defining example of a potential epic pairing of a dedicated “Truth Sayer” against an inveterate “Truth Slayer”, on many issues but on a particular issue that could be and most likely will be the the most crucial existential one of our time, climate change, this is an opportunity not to be passed up.
