I’m a little late posting this because I wanted to give some other folks a chance to use it first. So apologies, but certainly better a little late than never.
Here’s the skinny:
Last week, on Valentine’s Day eve, I received an email notification of an action that would occur the next morning: supporters would deliver flowers and candy to Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib to express support for their courageous leadership in the face of withering attacks.
The Justice for Muslims Coalition saw both Reps. Tlaib and Omar viciously attacked in recent weeks, and wanted to show their love and support. They asked for fellow Muslims and allies to join in thanking the two Congresswoman for their leadership.
I wish I could say that I’m kidding, but I listen to a lot of right-wing talk radio to keep track of what the bad guys are saying. And this very minute, Chris Plante, an odious tool that broadcast hate in the Washington DC market, just started attacking Rep. Omar as I write this. He’s attacking her for traveling to Honduras with Witness for Peace and calling her a Muslim communist. He actually said that it’s not bad enough that she’s a Muslim, but she’s a Muslim communist.
The hate is real folks.
God, this just turned into a live-blog. Plante is now attacking Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Rep. Omar for attending a bookstore event moderated by Linda Sarsour. (A google search tells me it will also attended by Reps. Mark Pocan and Pramila Jayapal, but Plante is only attacking the three Muslim women).
The hate is real. It’s so very real.
Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled program.
Rep. Omar, you’ll recall, had just gone through a round of media (especially right-wing media) and political (including from democratic leadership) excoriation for an inartful comment about AIPAC and their powerful influence among politicians of both parties.
The very next day, she did what so many human rights advocates were praying somebody would do: She raked Elliot Abrams over the coals for his support of torturers in Central America and his lack of credibility after being convicted of lying to Congress about the Reagan administrations sale of weapons to Iran to fund brutal guerrilla war.
