I’m assisting at our church worship service tomorrow, and as I’m looking over material I notice “Oh hey, the topic is about St. Patrick” (we’re UUs so it’s probably nowhere close to whatever treatment of the man you’re thinking of, but I’ll be able to tell you more post-sermon tomorrow :-)). Then it dawns on me that (a) I have Top Comments tonight; and after a quick check (b) It’s been four years since I’ve written a musical diary this time of year. So grab yourself whatever beverage suits you right now… green beer, whiskey, or a shamrock shake… and join me after a word from our sponsor!
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
Without further ado, a slate of Irish musicians to get us started on tonight’s musical journey:
- Danny Boy — Frederic Weatherly Given that everyone, as far as I can tell, has done a rendition of this song, I realized I had a choice between Celtic Woman and Irish Tenors. Smashin’ the Patriarchy here with the Celtic Woman version.
- Whiskey In The Jar — Traditional, Dubliners rendition Love this tune, and discovered via the magic of Wikipedia that American Colonials liked the song because of 'its irreverent attitude toward British officials". You’re probably most familiar with the Metallica version, but this one’s an old traditional.
- The Boys Are Back In Town — Thin Lizzy Released in 1976 by this hard rock band formed in Dublin, most of us may not know the lyrics but we can all sing the refrain.
- Superheroes — The Script Dublin has provided us both rock and pop, the latter in this band making music since 2001. Love this optimistic tune.
- The Emperor’s New Clothes — Sinead O'Connor I know it's not her "signature" song, but I've always liked this one better. No way I’m making a list of Irish musicians without her. Inspiration far before we were ready for it.
- Take Me To Church — Hozier I admit I had NO idea he was Irish. I did find this interesting, courtesy of not-a-primary-source Wikipedia: Lyrically, "Take Me to Church" is a metaphor, with the protagonist comparing his lover to religion. The song grew out of Hozier's frustration with the Catholic Church’s teachings which, although he himself was raised in the Protestant Quaker faith, dominated the social and political outlook of the Irish state.
- City Of Blinding Light — U2 There was no way to compile a list of this genre without including the most famous band of them all. They opened with this song when I saw them in 2009.
What are some of your favorite Irish artists? Keep the music going in the comments! But first, please take a look at our Trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. From John M Webb:
From last night's TC about the opioid crisis, luckylizard reminded me about hidden costs and the ultimate futility of and harm done by The War on Drugs. There are thousands of people who really need these medications and cannot get them because the DEA is doubling down on the Schedule. There is literally nothing about our approach to disease and addiction in this country that makes sense.
From BeninSC:
I was very impressed with this comment in John Webb’s Top Comments diary last night by Franks Human, about AIDs Outreach in years past, remarkable encounters and amazing experiences. One fine comment! Please keep writing comments like that, Franks Human!
From nomandates:
This comment by BubbaSan, in subir’s Let Us Remember. No words to describe.
