The title of this diary should have been “LoL LoL LoL ...” or “HAHAHAHAHA!!!” but since these names are taken, we will use a more humdrum title, but you get the picture.
Forbes reports that Flat Earth supporters are getting ambitious and planning a trip to the edge of the world, which they consider to be Antarctica (why not the Arctic? but never mind). All to prove that the Earth is really really flat. They don’t expect to fall off the edge, there is some snow-globe based theory (beyond my comprehension) that explains something about the Antarctic, the cosmos, and how everything holds together. All they need to do is to measure the coastline of Antarctica, perhaps touch the “Edge” and their flat theory will trump Science and the “Spherical Earth theory”.
Of course, they could take a plane ride to the South Pole but that may lead to some inconvenient truths.
The Forbes article has some details of this “expedition”. Here are some excerpts —
I’m not ashamed to say my name is Logan Paul and I think I’m coming out of the Flat Earth closet. If I'm going to put my name out there (as a Flat Earth supporter), I want to know the facts. The fact that we haven't been to the moon in over 50 years, the fact that the moon emits its own light. Some of the best scientists can't explain gravity; Neil Degrasse Tyson, Bill Nye, in the end, do they even know? I want to explore for myself and keep an open mind. There is a stigma of being a flat-earther and if I'm going to do it I want to know the facts.
Robbie Davidson: When we look at Antarctica if you take a globe and you squish it down, the Antarctic would go all the way around the Earth. It's kind of like an ice shore and it's very, very large. It's not like you just go there, and you can just peek over it. We don't believe anything can fall off the edge, because a big portion of the flat earth community believes that we're in a dome, like a snow globe. So the sun, moon, and stars are all inside. It's very high but all contained inside. So there's no way to actually fall off of the earth.
Don’t try to make sense of any of this. Just have a hearty laugh or do a face-palm, your choice.
The following documentary is supposed to be released today (March 20).
The Netflix Behind the Curve Documentary
Netflix recently released a documentary examining the flat-earth movement.
Apparently, the Flat Earthers disproved their own theory in the documentary -
But Why?
There are links to Flat Earth websites where the gullible can buy all sorts of stuff. There is even a flat-earth wiki wiki.tfes.org/… In the end, this is probably about grifters and scammers fooling some low-information people (conservatives?) and extracting some money from them. Or perhaps it is a deliberate attempt by the right-wing puppet-masters to keep their flock under control by making sure they remain ignorant and suspicious of Science.
Flat Earth and Reality-Challenged Beliefs
According to phys.org/..., —
- 16% of the US population say they doubt the scientifically established shape of the Earth, while 40% think that human-induced climate change is a hoax.
- The two groups intersect but not as much as we might think.
- Both sets are often motivated by a common mistrust of authority.
- One of the few commonalities which exist between all major conspiracy theories is that somehow scientists and governments are involved in a grand conspiracy for reasons unknown.
We have a long to go baby.
Epilogue
In any case, I am not going to present any discussion of or arguments against the Flat Earth theory. This is a diary to bring out some laughs. So, let the jokes begin …
