Today, Daily Kos Political Director David Nir announced the Maryland redistricting commission’s unanimous selection of a congressional map drawn by Elections Writer Stephen Wolf as a resolution to the state’s unconstitutional partisan gerrymander. This case presents a tremendous precedent-setting opportunity against partisan gerrymanders across the country.
“Daily Kos is pleased that the redistricting commission recognized Wolf’s expertise in drafting this new congressional map,” said Nir. “We submitted the map because we want courts to issue rulings that set a precedent that can be used to fight gerrymandering across the country.
“Because only a single district—Maryland’s 6th Congressional District—was struck down, Wolf correctly anticipated that the commission would prefer to follow established judicial preferences in similar redistricting litigation, which has seen courts favor new maps that alter as few districts as possible,” Nir continued. “He used strictly nonpartisan criteria to make changes to the 6th District and neighboring 8th District and worked to increase compactness while minimizing split cities and counties.
“We’ll continue to monitor the progress of redistricting litigation in Maryland and nationwide in our work to ensure free and fair elections for all Americans.”
