Rep. Ted Lieu and Rep. Don Beyer Jr. have officially referred Jared Kushner to the Department of Justice for criminal investigation after reports Donald Trump ordered that Kushner receive top-secret security clearance, despite recommendations from the White House counsel and the CIA not to give him access to sensitive government secrets. Citing Kushner’s false statements on security clearance forms and in public interviews, they are asking for an “immediate investigation to determine if Mr. Kushner is criminally liable for his false statements.”
In the letter, which can be read in full below, Rep. Lieu and Rep. Beyer detail the inconsistencies in Kushner’s responses on the SF-86 form he had to fill out while seeking clearance. Kushner repeatedly failed to detail contacts he had with foreign officials, including secretive meetings with Russian officials. The pair note that this is a violation of federal law and punishable by up to five years in prison.
Rep. Lieu and Rep. Beyer further contend this investigation is critical because it is a matter of national security.
