About six months ago, near the end of October 2018, lots of rumors were flying around on television that Donald Trump was about to fire the current Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Now, up to this time, I had seen the ridiculous amount of effort that both Donald Trump and his allies had gone through to discredit anything having to do with the Russia Investigation. They did this by endlessly trying to badmouth the Steele Dossier, various FBI personnel associated with James Comey, and anyone associated with Robert Mueller’s investigation. In addition, Republicans in both the House and Senate initiated close to worthless investigations, often behind closed doors, where they allowed witnesses not to answer those questions that they chose not to answer, in order to produce phony reports that supposedly “cleared” Donald Trump and his Administration. Because of all of this effort on the part of both Trump and his allies, I believed that Donald Trump would do practically anything to stop and/or discredit Mueller's investigation.
At this time, the rumors were that Donald Trump desperately wanted to fire the existing U.S. Attorney General Sessions and replace him with someone who would be his “Roy Cohn”--someone who would do whatever it took to protect Donald Trump. At the time, many people believed that Trump would wait until after the November 2018 midterms to replace the then current U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
My concern was that when the new AG came in, he would immediately shut down the Mueller Investigation and then find a way to make important data “disappear”. Because of my concerns, just before midnight, on Halloween night, I published on DailyKos.com a very long article entitled, “Robert Mueller Now Has To Do His Most Important Job Ever: He Needs To Back Up His Evidence.”
In the article, I wrote about how Robert Mueller’s Team could buy a boatload of portable hard drives for the purpose of making multiple backups of the most important evidence. Then they could safely hide the drives by driving out in the middle of nowhere, keeping track of distances, and safely bury the drives in the ground. Was I being super paranoid and thinking crazy? Perhaps, but I had a strong suspicion that Trump would make sure that his new AG would go to a huge amount of effort to make sure that some or all of Mueller’s findings would never see the light of day.
So today, here on DailyKos.com, there is currently a frontpage diary entitled “William Barr will never willingly release the Mueller report". I think that many of us here on DK currently believe that the odds are that William Barr is going to do all he can to make sure that as little of the Mueller Report makes its way to either Congress or the public as possible.
So, what if Mueller’s associates actually backed up the most important data and stored it offsite? Currently, one can buy USB thumb drives that can hold about two terabytes of data. A 400 page Mueller Report would take up just a tiny fraction of that, leaving plenty of room for supporting evidence. So, I am thinking of a scenario.
Imagine that at some time in the future, Congress receives a copy of the Mueller Report from U.S Attorney General William Barr that has been redacted to within an inch of its life. Then imagine, a little while later, that a friend of Robert Mueller’s is invited to dinner over at the Democrat Jerry Nadler’s house (he’s the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee). Mueller’s friend has a lovely dinner, after which he accidentally leaves a two terabyte thumb drive on a table somewhere before departing. On the thumb drive, written with a black Sharpie, are the words “Mueller Report”. Do you think this could happen? If I could realize the importance of backing things up offsite to make sure that a sycophantic AG doesn’t bury months and months of hard work, could not “13 Angry Democrats”?
