Imagine citizens actively participating in town halls and holding their presidential administration to account. This openness and access would be a clear difference from the culture of corruption coming from the Trump administration.
I like this “first day in office” executive order that Beto O’Rourke is proposing.
The former Texas congressman said he would sign an executive order on his first day in office requiring the town halls "to listen to you and to be accountable to you so that we deliver for you."
"Not a handpicked audience. Not a theatrical production. But a real, live, town hall meeting -- not just to answer questions, but to be held accountable," O'Rourke told progressive activists at the We the People Summit in Washington.
. . . . .
The commitment to monthly town halls by Cabinet members came as part of a planned rollout from O'Rourke's campaign, which immediately following his comment at the summit with a news release, in which O'Rourke said that "we must ensure that the people of this country can hold their government to account for the decisions it makes in their name.”
Compare Beto’s promise to build an administration that’s more accountable to the American people and the how Donald Trump’s administration operates. Several former Trump cabinet members—including EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price and FEMA Director Brock Long—have resigned under a cloud of corruption.
It’s out of control. Just about every day there’s a new scandal.
Scott Pruitt was facing more than a dozen investigations into his taxpayer-funded travel, questionable spending decisions, use of aides to conduct personal errands and other matters when he resigned July 5.
. . . . .
Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke left the Trump administration in January amid mounting federal investigations into his travel, political activity and potential conflicts of interest.
. . . . .
The Department of Homeland Security is investigating whether Brock Long broke agency rules by using government vehicles to commute from Washington to his home in Hickory, North Carolina.
I believe there’s a hunger in America for a government that actually works for the people, that promotes transparency and that tackles the corruption that’s become commonplace under Trump. What Beto promises here is In stark contrast with how Trump and his cronies operate.
It’s so important that we continually remind voters that Democrats work for the people and are accountable to the people. Beto’s proposed executive order is a great first step to reclaiming our government.
