Conservatives in our culture have one abiding philosophy: that the government isn’t good at doing stuff, and so private industry should be in charge of doing everything. The belief is based, misguidedly, in some 18th-century Enlightenment idealism. An idealism that posited that “great” men in powerful positions will do great things for all people. This is, of course, a fallacy. A system of unregulated “free markets” leads to the concentration and corruption of power, and private businesses competing for supremacy are primarily interested in solidifying their own power.
During a town hall in New York City last week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said that the VA health system isn’t broken and needs to be supported. She was responding to a push by Republicans to use the problems the VA has had in recent years as a pretense for privatizing its services.
Classic smarmy Trump. It sort of has everything you need to know about Donald Trump. It’s baselessly arrogant, kind of dumb, and filled with the deceitful promises of a con man. Part of what makes it perfect is that Trump’s clearly watching Fox News and seeing a report that tries to leverage private industry but can only muster up a bragging falsehood.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is working at her job. Working a job, multitasking, these are things that Donald Trump cannot do. In fact, he might not be able to multitask his own mind, giving him the goldfish-level memory that absolves his conscience of all of his failures. Ocasio-Cortez was as informative as she could be, explaining that government programs work, and are very good when given the resources needed to function as planned.
“Like many public systems, GOP want to rip the battery out + say the whole car doesn’t work, so they can sell it for parts.”
It’s hard to argue with that analysis of conservative “free market” thinking.
