Donald Trump moved right from threatening America's health care to threatening America's economy with a border closure that would accomplish nothing except torpedoing it.
Senate Republicans have quickly buried their heads in the sand on Trump's threat, clearly praying it will go away if they just ignore it. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her Democrats aren't about to let GOP lawmakers separate themselves from Trump's toxic policies while clinging to him to boost their re-election chances.
On Tuesday night, Pelosi and her top lieutenants strategized about taking a vote on a symbolic measure formally rejecting Trump's stated intention of halting all border traffic, according to Politico. The measure would hit GOP lawmakers right where it hurts, asserting that Trump's fanatical immigration policies are "not in the economic interest of the United States of America." In fact, Trump himself stated that the economy is taking a back seat to his border obsession. “Security is more important to me than trade,” he said Tuesday.
Democrats sense an opening. “This notion that we can close the border is just stupid,” Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi told Politico. “The notion that because he’s throwing a hissy fit because he can’t get his way that he’s going to put the entire economics of the United States in peril doesn’t make sense.”
Nope, it doesn't, which is exactly why Republicans are pretending it isn't happening.
