Whatever you do is good enough…
I know I’m not the only one who suffers from “but if I’d only done this” -itis (or 2nd guessing, as it is commonly referred to). My ability to critique myself to Hell and back is legendary (in my own mind). However, it will never become an Olympic sport and I’m pretty sure it will never win me a Nobel. So, how do we break out of this debilitating disease and move forward?
First off, you need to build up your self trust. Second-guessing is often caused by not trusting ourselves. Self-doubt can happen as a result of critical parents, perfectionist tendencies, low self-confidence or pessimistic thinking. Or, in some cases, all of the above. (From www.livehappy.com/...)
- Notice and Replace — Recognize when you are bring self critical and change the directive. Start your sentences with “I choose” and end it with a positive.
- Embrace risk taking — Go outside your comfort zone. This is hard for me but I am working on getting more comfortable doing things alone.
- Accept and redirect — It’s ok to realize you made a “not so good” decision and tweak it better.
- Build up your self trust — Don’t immediately act in the moment. Look at the broader picture. Rely on your own experiences.
- Embrace a growth mindset — Realize that mistakes are what allow our minds and abilities to get stronger.
- Rewire your brain for self compassion - Sit quietly and accept your thoughts as they come to you without forming judgments and send compassion to yourself and others.
Remember, if you don’t take care of you, who will?
This is your Friday “happy” thread...what are you happy about?
