Philosopher and author Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) remains a beloved icon of American freedom of thought. He is widely quoted across social media for the simple wisdom he offers us today.
STAND GUARD…. what does that mean to us in this day and age of being bombarded with email, text messages, radio, television, the constant noise of American daily life that we take for granted as being normal?
When we understand that as thinking beings we are the ones in charge of the thoughts we think, it becomes easier to extrapolate the concept of standing guard to being in a continual state of awareness.
That doesn’t have to mean wariness, where we are nervously looking around, waiting for the next attack.
It doesn’t have to mean fearfully bracing for the next actions of the Trump Administration, and the assault on our freedoms by the government that is supposed to be our servant.
What it does mean is that we are conscious that we have a choice in every living moment: to allow in good thoughts, or to allow any thoughts of any variety to simply enter our mind.
It’s the difference between being aware that we have choices or of feeling the victim of all that goes on around us.
When we are in victim mode, actions and words of people like POTUS 45 control our feelings. We take in everything as if there is no filter. We allow ourselves to be angry, upset, furious, scared, threatened.
That’s the old way of living, in a culture that says we are basically powerless and that life is about struggle and pain.
Emerson was a key player in the early 19th century transcendentalist movement, which grew over the years into what we would now call “New Age” thinking or even quantum thought.
The more we understand what Emerson intended by saying “stand guard at the portal of your mind,” the more readily we access our innate power to rid our country of bad leaders who are on a path of greed and destruction.
With the power of our collective thought focused on creating liberty and justice for all, we can move forward steadily and surely, opening the gates to a brighter future for our nation and the world.
We’re in the early stages of this stage in human evolution to a higher order. But we’re here now, and we are creating magnificent change.
The children being born now are coming with a more natural awareness of their thought powers. Let’s not do what was inadvertently done to us by squashing their creativity and warning them that the only way to defeat bad laws and bad people is by being angry and pushing back.
Let’s move forward with the knowledge that love always trumps hate. ALWAYS.
Blessings,
Evelyn
