There’s a Huckabee that everyone is talking about today, and surprisingly, it’s not White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. It’s actually her dad.
Remember former Arkansas governor and onetime Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee? He has some serious antics in his past. One thing that’s consistent is that he really, really doesn’t like the LGBTQ community. His feelings are so strong, he’s declared that the queer community is the “greatest threat” to America.
In an interview with The Christian Post, he bemoaned the (still limited) advances in rights and protections the LGBTQ community has gained in recent years. You know, how same-sex marriage is now recognized in every state, but you can still be fired for being openly transgender? That sort of thing.
“The biggest threat to biblical principles today is the failure to apply a biblical standard of maleness and femaleness,” he said to the religious publication. “We are creating this illusion that there is no gender, there is no identity, and I’m blaming the Christian Church.”
Who else is to blame? Apparently, everyone who gets—or supports the concept of—no-fault divorce.
“That’s when we first started losing that sense of sacredness of what marriage meant,” he continued, suggesting that no-fault divorces paved the way for people accepting same-sex marriage. “So I’m not really that surprised that same sex-marriage has become in vogue because the Christian Church were the ones who essentially abdicated a strict responsibility about what biblical marriage should look like.”
Single parents, technology, and of course, millennials are also to blame, according to Huckabee.
“There are some people who are in single parenthood, not because they want to be, but because they were forced to be. And we ought to give [them] all the support,” he told the magazine. “But we should never pretend that it is as good as a loving mother and father in a home where a child sees both genders play out their norms because that’s the modeling of behavior that would be ideal for a child to grow up in.”
Lovely!!
There’s no evidence here, obviously, but he preaches as though he believes it in his heart. Oh—and he used to be a Southern Baptist minister, prior to his unsuccessful runs for president. Maybe that’s part of it?
“The gender dysphoria we’re seeing today is largely due to the fact that the Church has failed to present very clearly the words of Jesus and Genesis 5:2: “Male and female He created them,” he continued to the religious publication.
Disturbing? Absolutely. Surprising? Not at all.
In the past, Huckabee has said same-sex relationships have an “ick factor.” He compared same-sex marriage to incest, polygamy, and drug use. He also used transgender people as the butt of a joke about women-only locker rooms and showers.
Huckabee was forced to resign from his position on the Country Music Association Foundation because of his anti-LGBTQ views just last year. There’s ... a lot to unpack with that one, but one thing is certainly true. Huckabee—and people with his views—are far more dangerous to this country than the LGBTQ community.
