So, today I gave my final exam in my freshman chemistry class. I just finished grading them. As far as I can tell, one of two things happened. Either all of my actual students were teleported to another planet and replaced by beings who look identical but were utterly innocent of chemistry, or I accidentally started lecturing in Serbo-Croatian.
I feel kinda bad because, on balance, these students were nice people. They just stink at chemistry. Yesterday, one of them told me about his plan to go to medical school. Um….
I haven’t figured their final grades yet, and their lab grades could help them significantly, but from the beginning, this has been a very weak class. Maybe they’ll gain their footing in later classes, but frankly, I think a lot of them would be better off majoring in anthropology. Their skill set just doesn’t lie in the physical sciences.
And just a reminder that in the land of academia, finals week is generally week of utter chaos. Despite the excitement of Barr’s testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee (the lying bastard), I am not participating much around here these days. Pressure will slack off next week, after grades are due, but I’m keeping my head down for the time being.

In Joan McCarter’s Senate Judiciary Hearings Livestream #6 thread today, noweasels nails my sentiments exactly:
“If there is a hell, Ted Cruz’s voice will be on the PA system.”
Ha!

In Aldous J Pennyfarthing's diary about Trump's latest self-own, a discussion of the nuclear launch codes arose (go figure), and A Citizen had an excellent suggestion for whoever sets those codes.
