On Wednesday it was learned that the Trump administration would be opposing any passage of the Equality Act, reintroduced by the Democratic-led House in March. NBC News reports that a “senior administration official” claimed that “poison pills” in the bill made it impossible for the administration to support it, despite its supposed opposition to “discrimination of any kind” and support for “the equal treatment of all.”
Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, who co-sponsored the bill, said in response that “No American should be at risk of being fired, evicted from their home or denied services because of who they are or whom they love. The bipartisan Equality Act will move our country forward and the Trump administration’s opposition to it highlights how important it is to take back the White House in 2020.”

The Republican Party, continuing its fight against equal rights for all people, has recently turned to stoking transphobic sentiments to keep its base involved and paying attention. The Equality Act, which is scheduled for a vote on the House floor on Thursday, would codify protections for trans Americans.
