Republican state legislators from Virginia sent an apology letter to Capitol Police in April on behalf of fellow Republican state Sen. Amanda Chase. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that on March 22, Sen. Chase “berated and cursed at a Capitol Police officer who refused to let her park in a secure area outside the state Capitol.” (This is information uncovered by the Times-Dispatch through a Freedom of Information Act request.)
The police report says Chase told the officer she would not move her vehicle “unless you let the f---ing barricades down to let me in,” caused traffic to back up, and made a disparaging comment about Senate Clerk Susan Clarke Schaar.
Chase refused to move her car when told she couldn’t park inside the plaza without permission, saying, “Do you know who I am?,” I’m Senator Chase! ... Don’t you see it on my license plate!” and “but I guess you don’t care!,” according to the police report.
According to reports, that “disparaging comment” was calling the Senate clerk “Ms. Piggy.” It’s also important to note here that Officer Ashley Berryman is black, something that Sen. Chase mentioned during an interview earlier this week.
“I guess she thought I was white privilege. I was like, look I don’t want special treatment just because I have senator plates,” Chase said. “But I have parked here before.”
That’s quite a thing to say, isn’t it? It sort of sounds like you wanted special privileges. Sen. Chase is best known for carrying a gun around, saying she was afraid of leftist elements in our society. She told reporters that she didn’t remember what was said between her and the officer but that she was a “Christian conservative,” and would never use some of the language the officer wrote in her report. Hmmm.
