It’s been a good couple of days for Casa Brillig, not the least of which is because K1 is home for the summer after finishing Junior year of college. It’s really good to have her home! We’re getting used to being a four-person household again, as our hot water heater will verify! :-)
Bringing her home fell to me this year, as Mr. Brillig is overloaded with work deadlines and fires to put out and K2 had enough activities and schoolwork we didn’t want to pull him out for two days and have him miss soccer. The drive is 400 miles each way which is tiring, plus bringing much of her and her boyfriend’s stuff to storage then loading the car for the trip home left us both a wee bit tired. I’m almost but not quite recovered from the trek, but tired and sleep are words close to my heart tonight. Cross over the Story Break with something that either will put you to sleep or keep you awake, and let’s make some music!
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
For your listening pleasure tonight, a collection of songs with titles or lyrics related to sleep, sleepiness, or trying to stay awake! Please add your own favorites in the comments!
- Stay Awake — composed by Richard M. Sherman & Robert B. Sherman — This Suzanne Vega version of the Mary Poppins classic is Mr. Brillig’s favorite lullaby. We sang it many times to K1 as she fell asleep!
- Lullaby — The Cure — OK, if you watch the video and don’t like spiders, you’re NOT going to sleep!
- I’m So Tired — The Beatles — You knew there would be a Beatles song in here somewhere. It could just as easily have been I'm Only Sleeping, or Golden Slumbers (this version by the late great Brad Delp with his group Beatlejuice).
- Who Needs Sleep — Barenaked Ladies — This is my theme song more nights than not, alas. Insomnia FTW!
- The Lion Sleeps Tonight — Solomon Linda — This song has a fascinating history and has probably been recorded by among others every a capella group everywhere. Link is the original version, but you’ll also recognize ones by The Tokens, Ladysmith Black Mambazo/Mint Juleps and The Nylons
- Ode To Sleep — twenty one pilots — I don’t remember if they did this when I saw them in concert, but I will say it was one of the most unique shows I’ve ever been to. Definitely NOT a snoozefest.
- Behind The Wall Of Sleep — The Smithereens — Now I lie in bed and think of her
Sometimes I even weep, Then I dream of her behind the wall of sleep
- Talking In Your Sleep — The Romantics — Something to keep you awake, worrying what happens if you actually DO fall asleep!
What songs are on your sleep list! Either to help you fall asleep, or about staying awake, or some other connection? Let us know in the comments, after perusing the trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures, brought to you tonight by the wonderful BeninSC!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.

Comes this comment by Bubba San, about the contrast (similarities!) between some holocaust memorials in Europe and memorials to lynching victims in Montgomery, AL, visiting with Bernie Sanders, and an understandably emotional response.
