Over the years I’ve watched many of you in your political activism. I’ve watched as you knocked doors, made calls, volunteered with campaigns and initiatives, and ran for office. It wasn’t until last year that I took my first steps towards being more active in a direct campaign fashion and became a Turf Wrangler for a local state senate campaign. It was satisfying and while my candidate didn’t win, it cemented my desire to be active in my local political scene. And so, when a fellow member of my local Democratic circle (and a current elected city official) let me know she was going to run for higher municipal office, I said immediately “Yay! How can I help?”
Grab a beverage, and hop below the Story Break so I can tell you what I’ll be up to this summer...

Not long ago, my candidate assembled her Field Director and Campaign Manager plus a half dozen or so city residents eager to volunteer for her campaign. We shared our skill sets, likes, dislikes and then figured out how we each could best help the campaign.
I got a call explaining what I could do to help, and my first thought was “This Is A Thing?!”
As we all know, campaigns need money. And one of the things candidates must do is make phone calls and ask for money. Did you know there’s an activity named Call Time? I know your next question… how do you keep a candidate motivated to keep calling friends, neighbors, political associates, etc and ask for money while validating that this is Unfun yet Necessary, and keep track of who what when how much?
Enter a Call Time Manager. Basically, I get to use years of carefully honed skills motivating my children to do Things They Dislike and keeping them on track, and call it Campaign Volunteering!
I had no idea this was a Role. I’d been insecure about my ability to provide a useful service to my chosen candidate and I learn that glaring, pointed gestures, the ability to wrangle a spreadsheet and fast typing is USEFUL!
Have you ever found out there’s a job/role/activity you did not know existed but as soon as you do, it’s clear it was made for you (or someone!)? Share in the comments!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. From elenacarlena:
Please list Fred Clarkson's comment as a Top Comment in kos' latest straw poll, as he addresses age issues of our presidential candidates.
From mettle fatigue:
Nominating this comment by Ronin83, from Joan McCarter’s Kamala Harris has a very clever plan for securing abortion rights.
[thank you for this excellent first nomination to Top Comments!]
