This is me, four hours a day, making phone calls to the donors of the Commonwealth:
“Hi, this is Shelly Simonds calling, sorry to bother you but I’m pouring everything I have into a campaign for the Virginia House that could shift power to the Democrats. Can you spare some dollars to help us win?”
I would like to thank the good people of Virginia for answering my call. I’m proud to announce that our Simonds for Delegate campaign (HD-94) just passed the $100K raised mark this week along with my fellow candidate Larry Barnett (HD-27).
Any candidate will tell you raising money is hard and uncomfortable. But this is the way we bring progressive change to Virginia and stand up to the multi-national corporations that use their donations to buy influence in Richmond. Small dollar donations are our weapon against big money politics.
Last reporting period I outraised my Republican opponent by $25,000. Fundraising has been easier this time around because of my notoriety as the “coin-toss lady.” Donors in my community and around Virginia have been good to me because they remember the recount and feel what happened was wrong.
Want to inspire people to vote? Just look at our tied election in Newport News, Virginia that was decided by a game of chance in 2017. In the end, it wasn’t just about who got to represent our city in the House of Delegates. The tied election ended in a random drawing that decided the balance of power in the entire State House.
Our Simonds for Delegate campaign will be reminding voters of this in the lead up to our November 5 election in 2019. We say “Your vote could be the one vote that decides an election, that gets dangerous illegal guns off the streets, that gets teachers a pay raise, that enables us to pass the Equal Rights Amendment in Virginia.” One vote can matter that much.
