A friend posted to Zuckerberg’s book this morning about a municipal vote. In the interest of privacy (and also, I don’t know FULL details of the issues at hand) he wrote:
Go vote. Now more than ever. Just in my district we have a resident that made his money and now is rabidly against any expenditures by local government, to the point of putting up signs which lie about the state of the municipalities finances. Don’t let the fuckers win, make your voice heard. Also, when in NAME OF CITY REDACTED avoid RESTAURANT like the plague. These statements are not unrelated.
I messaged him to say that now I felt guilty because our last Daily Kos meetup was held at that restaurant. His response? “Yeah, we’ll be avoiding there from here on out”.
Grab a beverage, preferably from a nice, socially responsible provider, and hop below the Story Break.
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
This got me thinking about the many meetups, gatherings, and other times we gather together in restaurants or other social venues. Or the times are various offline activism circles gather, or place orders, or do all the other things involving financial transactions. Are we choosing whenever possible spaces and places that allow us to walk our talk?
Several months ago my Massachusetts city held a $5M Prop 2½ Override vote to fund our schools and in doing so free up money that rightfully belonged in other city departments. I did take note of which businesses, owners, and individuals supported the override and which were vocal opponents, and yes. I choose accordingly when I make spending choices in town. It’s not possible every single time, obviously, but in the case of a quarterly meetup, I expect we can find a venue to eat, chat, and hang out in that does NOT explicitly embody “I got mine, good luck with yours” philosophies.
Let’s walk our talk, people. I suspect many of you, dear readers, already do. Because you’re here.
Thanks to my dear friend BeninSC for bringing us tonight’s Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures. I am even more in his debt because I am off as soon as this is queued to take my younger pup to the emergency vet, for some issues that hopefully will be nothing but might be More. Send good thoughts to my Snickerpup.
Note from Ben: We send your pup love and light and best wishes, brillig! Here’s hoping tomorrow brings good news and an innocuous resolution!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
