It was reported in the Wall Street Journal that the half-brother of Kim Jung Un was spying for the CIA. Kim had him murdered. He was reportedly assassinated in a Malayasian airport in 2017
Asked about this Donald Trump said he wouldn't allow the CIA's use of Kim Jong Un's half-brother as an informer on the North Korean regime. Lawrence O'Donnell explained why that's "as close as you can get to treason" with a country the U.S. is not formally at war with. Lawrence O’Donnell, Wendy Sherman who was, among having had other important jobs, President Obama’s Special Advisor to the President and Secretary of State and North Korea Policy Coordination, former CIA agent Ned Price, and former Chief of Staff to Al Gore and Joe Biden Ron Klain were as appalled as I was as they discussed this.
The major news on MSNBC right now:
- Mueller hearings
- Hong Kong protests
- Trump boasting about Moscow deal
Even if the Wall Street Journal story isn’t true, Trump’s comment should be the main story.
Here’s the CNN story:
(CNN)President Donald Trump said he would not have allowed the CIA to recruit the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "under my auspice."
Trump wouldn't confirm or deny reports that Kim Jong Nam had been working with the CIA prior to being
killed in Malaysia in February 2017, saying that he didn't know anything about it.
"I know this: that the relationship is such that that wouldn't happen under my auspices, but I don't know about that. Nobody knows," he said.
Two accounts, a new book by the Washington Post reporter Anna Fifield and a Wall Street Journal story, report that Kim’s brother Kim Jong Nam was a CIA informant. Kim Jong Nam was killed in a shocking chemical-weapons attack in the Kuala Lumpur airport in February 2017. Trump was asked about the revelation as he left the White House for a trip to Iowa, and his answer was jarring.
“I see that, and I just received a beautiful letter from Kim Jong Un,” Trump said. “I think the relationship is very well, but I appreciated the letter. I saw the information about the CIA with regard to his brother or half brother, and I would tell him that would not happen under my auspices. I wouldn’t let that happen under my auspices. I just received a beautiful letter from Kim Jong Un.”
The first surprising thing here is that Trump gave no sign of having been aware of the story prior to the Journal report. He did not, however, dispute its accuracy.
It is being covered but it should be the top story, but where are the two inch headlines this story justifies? Are we so inured to the insane excesses of Trump that it might as well be on page six?
