I am going to push back every time I hear the “Rachel repeats herself” meme as if that were something bad.
She repeats herself because that is the way average people learn and retain information.
Apparently too many of us have had the frustrating experience of being the smart kid in the room who understood what the teacher said the first time, and then we sat there frustrated while she went over it again, and again, and then a third time for the slowest kids, who then raised their hand and asked an obvious question because they still didn’t get it.
When the topic at hand was geometry or geography, that was one thing.
But now it is a literal matter of life and death whether the teacher can give as many people as possible a basic overview of current events, help them grasp the basics of how government is supposed to work, and lead them to comprehend the dangerous consequences of losing our system of democracy.
She repeats herself because even the kids who are half asleep, not paying attention, or chewing paper into spitballs in the back of the room are suddenly beginning to notice she is talking about something important, and the improvement in her ratings means that more folks are starting to listen.
If you understood it the first time, or if you already knew it because you actually read the homework assignment or remembered it from last year’s textbook or were just bright enough to figure it out for yourself, that’s great.
But the votes of just the smart kids is not enough to win elections.
I know lots of people who have never followed politics before who have just started watching Rachel since DJT was elected, because they heard through the grapevine that she explains the whole mess that is going on in a way they can understand.
This needs to be the NUMBER ONE CRITERION for selecting our nominee in 2020.
Forget every other thing on a candidate’s resume. If s/he can’t explain why the progressive message is better than the Rcon message in clear language comprehensible to everyone (not just the smart well-informed folks), we will lose again.
If we pick someone who thinks s/he can throw a whole stream of complicated words at people and expect them to analyze it, we will lose again.
If we pick someone who thinks s/he can present a list of facts and trust people to reach the reasonable conclusion on their own, we will lose again.
So everyone please stop complaining that Dr. Maddow repeats herself a lot, or gives “too much” background, or over-explains political stories.
The voices who are able to make the True Blue message understandable to the average voter between now and November 3 are the only ones who can save us.
The over-explainers, the basic point repeaters, the “tell them what you’re going to tell them, then tell them, then tell them what you told them” storytellers—they are our best (and maybe our only) chance to save our country and even save the world.
this song is very repetitive. it is also very effective at encouraging people to dance.
