Good morning, Newdists. As you know, I was absent last Sunday—it was because I was eating myself into a food coma with the BF in Austin. We went to Austin with another couple who are close friends of ours, and we spent much of the weekend stuffing our faces, as usual. We took a number of food pics, and I’d hate to see them go to waste, so I’ll leave them here—since many of them are breakfast-appropriate.
As is tradition, we began our Austin trip with breakfast at the original Kerbey Lane Cafe, an Austin breakfast institution. Parking always sucks and there’s always a wait, but it’s worth it. I got the Crispy Chicken Benedict, which is fried chicken on a biscuit with Hollandaise and green chile sauce. I didn’t like how my food pic turned out, but the BF took some of his enchilada benedict:
After breakfast, we went shopping on South Congress Avenue, which of course included a stop at Home Slice Pizza for lunch. There aren’t many ways to make Home Slice look attractive (as delicious as it is), but I think the BF did it:
One of the friends we were with—a New Yorker—was unsatisfied with Home Slice’s “authentic NY-style” pizza. At which point I reminded him of the “Texas BBQ” in New York.
Dinner, as tradition dictates, was at The Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood. It’s out in the middle of nowhere and the wait is always at least an hour long, but oh so worth it! While you wait, you can stand at the pit and take in the sights and smells…
We got the family-style BBQ, which means unlimited meat and sides for $25 per person! The sausage, ribs, and brisket are great, but almost as good is their potato salad. We had a group of six, and we went through three plates of meat, two plates of bread, and three bowls of potato salad. Yes, we were nearly comatose afterward, but it’s safe to say we got our money’s worth.
Some more pics...these are all from breakfast the next day at Cafe Java (to which we’ll definitely be returning):
It wouldn’t be an Austin trip without going to Tarka, a counter-serve Indian restaurant chain. Their chicken tikka masala remains the best I’ve had anywhere:
And finally, pho and egg rolls from Tan My, our favorite pho spot in Austin:
What do you want to chat about this morning?
All are welcome to join the fun, the silliness, the conversations. If you don’t know...just ask! Some things really do require a bit of explanation.
There will be a few surprises along the way, all good ones, we hope.
We are here to keep building the Daily Kos Community.
We post Mon-Sun at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. On Sunday we go to the C!U!A! posting to show support for all the work being done to promote Democratic candidates/causes. Please to join us there, as well.
Pie fights will be met with outrageous ridicule and insults. Trolls will be incinerated and served at the next group BBQ. As briquettes.
