A couple of weeks ago, Snowman3’s excellent diary made me stop and think: if I bumped into a friend or a neighbor in the elevator of the building where I live, and if that person asked me whom I support for president and why, what would I answer?
Why do I support Kamala’s candidacy? Good question. Is it because she’s a younger candidate? Well, yes, partly. She has a completely modern viewpoint, a realistic view of the situation in this country. If she ascends to the presidency she won’t make the mistake of thinking that because she and her party are civilized, the opposition is civilized too. She knows they’re not. She knows they don’t want to reach across the aisle. She knows the opposition, so far from being loyal, is out to consolidate its hold on power and white supremacy.
Is it because she’s a woman and therefore understands the lifelong institutionalized misogyny to which every woman in every sphere—domestic, academic, commercial, artistic, or political—is subject? Well, partly. It’s like that old saying, “When you’re with other women, you don’t have to explain anything. They already know.”
Is it because she’s a woman of color? A woman who has had to contend with America’s built-in bias against people with brown or black skin? Well, yes, partly. No white person can ever understand what people of color endure every second of every day in this racist country of ours. “Am I going to be shot dead because I’m mowing my lawn/putting groceries in my car/picnicking in public park while being a person of color?”
Do I support her because she’s the child of immigrants from India and Jamaica? Aside from our indigenous Native American (or Indian, if you prefer) citizens, we are all the descendants of immigrants, so she knows we’re all here on sufferance. Our ancestors uprooted the people who lived here and stole their lands. It’s up to us, their descendants, to work for the most decent life possible for everyone in a country full of problems and a world filled with dangers.
So, in the end, why do I support Kamala Harris? A 30-second speech contains 75 words.
Kamala Harris is smart, tough, and disciplined. She seeks justice for the oppressed and fairness for everyone without regard to color, creed, or status. Not only that, she thinks outside the box. She’s already thought deeply about what this country needs and if elected, come January 2021 she’ll set to work immediately. She looks like us, she’ll work for us—she’s one of us!
There are about 70 million reasons to support Kamala Harris for President!

Group Guidelines
The Kamala2020 community group has been created to positively support Senator Kamala Harris, and not to engage in negativity towards other Democrats running in the 2020 primaries.
All should be made to feel welcomed here. What’s not welcomed here is petty bickering over any of our preferred candidates, or personal attacks on fellow Democrats. We’re not responsible for the actions of others who may offend, insult or attempt to sow discord and disunity — that’s on them.
What we are responsible for are our own words and actions — that’s 100% on us.
I’d like to ask all group members, as well as those dropping by who support or are interested in Kamala’s bid for the nomination, that we not respond to negativity from other campaign’s supporters with even more negativity. Let’s do better than our best and respond with respect, humor or try to hold our peace. Recipes and cat pics work, too 😃
Doing no harm costs us nothing... pie-fights will cost us everything.
