The latest Democrat to speak out in support of impeaching President Donald Trump? Rep. Katie Porter, who represents California’s 45th district, covering Anaheim Hills to Mission Viejo, posted a now-viral video to Twitter in support of impeaching Trump over what’s been said in the Mueller report.
As a quick review of who Porter is, she defeated two-term incumbent Republican Rep. Mimi Walters in November. Porter, who is also a law professor at UC Irvine, was actually one of four Democrats to win a seat in Orange County, making it a full sweep. This is pretty exciting because Republicans have had a clutch on the OC for a long time.
You might also remember Porter as the congresswoman who asked Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson about REOs (real estate owned properties) because Carson’s answer went viral. Because it was so thorough? Of course not. Carson thought Porter was asking him about Oreo cookies.
Here’s the clip:
Back to today. Here’s the Twitter post with her video embedded:
The video is just over three minutes long and is worth watching in full. But here are some particular gems:
“In his report and public remarks, Director Mueller emphasized that under current law, he did not have the option to indict the president,” the congresswoman stated. “But despite the limits of his authority, the special counsel was clear that he could not exonerate the president. And he presented extensive evidence of obstruction of justice that requires continued investigation by Congress.”
“The administration has refused to respect the rule of law,” Porter continued in the video. “They have ignored multiple subpoenas, they directed current and former high-ranking officials to disregard summons to testify and the president has continued his effort to spread mistrust for our law enforcement, contempt for our journalists and false information about the law, Director Mueller’s findings and basic, uncontested facts.”
Obviously, Democrats are divided on Trump’s impeachment. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has consistently said that impeaching Trump is
not the move, but some Democrats are stirring.
Torunn Sinclair, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee, gave a
statement in a press letter which describes Porter as “consumed by hatred.” Eek! The exact words: "Katie Porter is so consumed by her hatred of President Trump that she is willing to thumb her nose at her constituents, the majority of whom oppose impeachment. This will cost Porter her seat in Congress in 2020."
But will it? Not if Democrats get out and vote.
