The Trump megadonor owners of the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas want Congress to make a fix to the mistake-riddled Republican tax law, even as the Palms illegally refuses to bargain with workers who overwhelmingly voted to unionize last year. A whoopsy of a change to how quickly companies can write off certain property upgrades will affect taxes on $690 million in work on the Palms. But some members of the House want to know why they should be doing the Palms and its parent company any favors given the labor situation there.
“Each of us has spoken out loudly and frequently about significant problems with the TCJA, and we believe that all the parties adversely affected by the bill deserve a chance to make their voices heard,” 14 Democrats wrote to Frank Fertitta, CEO of Palms parent company Red Rock Resorts. “We also believe that employees at your facilities deserve a chance to make their voices heard.”
”[I]t pains me to know that your company would be getting this benefit while simultaneously and potentially illegally blocking its employees of their right to form and join a union,” Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick wrote to Fertitta.
The workers at the Palms voted by a whopping 84% to 16% margin to join the Culinary Union, but the Palms has refused to recognize the union and refused to bargain. The National Labor Relations Board has said that the company is unlawfully engaging in unfair labor practices; the company is appealing to the courts.
