Good evening! As the title says, Saturday’s diary was about some possibilities in the art of comment mining. But why would one do that?
In some ways we live in the era of social media. Daily Kos is a political website, but even here there are social media aspects. I realize there are many here who are not fans of social media. I am on Facebook, technically, but I am not that big a fan. Of course, Zuckerberg is pretty bad, and his site played a very big role in the Russian takeover of our elections. Clearly it doesn’t trouble his conscience.
More below.
Top Comments recognizes the previous day's Top Mojo and strives to promote each day's outstanding comments through nominations made by Kossacks like you. Please send comments (before 9:30pm ET) by email to topcomments@gmail.com or by our KosMail message board.
Twitter has its own place in the social media pantheon. It does not surprise me that Daily Kos enables quick and easy sharing of diaries to either of those platforms. But sharing abound outside of those two. Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Pinterest, Reddit, Foursquare … yes, I can rattle a few off, but I don’t really know them. I do have some sense of their culture, which is built around sharing.
On Twitter, if there is something one finds worth sharing, one ‘retweets’ it. Whatever it is, whether one shares it onward to promote it or ridicule it, its readership and exposure grows. On Facebook, one may share nearly anything. Web hyperlinks, videos, graphics, texts … again, whether one shares them to promote or to criticize, readership and views go up.
On Daily Kos, many moons ago, Susan Gardner started Diary Rescue (now Community Spotlight), for the purpose of sharing worthwhile diaries that do not receive the attention they perhaps merit. The ‘Rescue Rangers’ - volunteers who staff Community Spotlight - read every single diary posted each day.
To show the same appreciation for comments, Carnacki in 2006 began a diary series for that purpose. Unfortunately, on a site that can see 50,000 comments and up in a 24 hour period, it is a practical impossibility to read even a small portion of those comments. Even if it could be done, it never will be.
So, even on nights when no comments are submitted, we try to show our appreciation for the role of comments on Daily Kos.
We Top Comments diarists have their own lives. Most of us would like to be able to mine more than we do. But (also) because we can’t, we welcome submissions from any and all members. Our guests each night have shown that they read very broadly on the site. You guys read many diaries, and many comments. Heck you MAKE many comments!
Where Daily Kos has a mechanism for sharing diaries with a single click to FB or Twitter, no such option exists for comments. It takes intention to share a comment. One has to capture the web address of the comment (its timestamp) and then find a place to share it onward, to ‘retweet’ it, as it were, within the Daily Kos culture.
Top Comments exists for this reason, so that every night, there is a place where one can share comments to an established and appreciative audience. That is why we try to keep this community going. Why it matters to us to try.
Please keep sharing quality comments you find with us. It means more than you may know.
On to tonight’s comments! Formatted by brillig, one who understands the ins and outs of this at well as anyone!
TOP COMMENTS
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? Several highlights:
dcg2 highlights This comment by NorthBronxDem, in Jen Hayden‘s Jared Kushner can't say whether he'd alert the FBI if Russia secretly offered to help again.
dellreese highlighted two comments in Walter Einenkel’s Five hugely visible British protest images that probably have Trump fuming in London: this comment by ellpeecee and this one by Arfeeto.
