I think everyone here is fully versed on Mr. Trump’s attack on the Squad this weekend; so I don’t need to recount it here.
And while I appreciate all of the riposte from various corners highlighting his racism, nativism, and sexism, I’d like to add another viewpoint in this short diary.
It was correct to highlight that Mss. Cortez, Pressley, and Tlaib were born in the United States, and that Ms. Omar is a naturalized citizen. Unfortunately, I feel like this commentary acquiesces to Mr. Trump’s assertion that where someone is born is a qualifier for the acceptability of their speech.
The 2.9 Million people of NY-14, MA-7, MI-13, and MN-5 Elected to have their voices Represented by these women. That is the only point that needs to be made here. These are Elected Representatives that Trump wants to silence.
Per Wikipedia:
Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution sets three qualifications for representatives. Each representative must (1) be at least twenty-five years old, (2) have been a citizen of the United States for the past seven years, and (3) be (at the time of the election) an inhabitant of the state they represent.
Their condemnation of Mr. Trump and his Administration is acceptable because they represent their districts. That is the only reason why. It has nothing, whatsoever, to do with where they were born. We shouldn’t buy into the framing that birthplace has any meaning here.
Mr. Trump, blinded by nativism, wants us to believe that it does.
note — the graphic above shows AOC representing NY-12. Her website says NY-14, so I’m going with that.
