[UPDATE: Previous version noted four fatalities, but further reports say three victims have been identified]
Three people were killed and 15 injured at the Gilroy Garlic Festival on Sunday evening. The annual event takes place approximately 30 miles south of San Jose and Silicon Valley.
Witnesses described seeing a man in camouflage emerge from behind the main stage with a high-powered automatic rifle. He began firing indiscriminately into the crowd, who were gathered watching a local band perform an encore. A 6-year-old boy was among those killed. CBS News reports his mother and grandmother were also shot.
A 6-year-old boy is among the victims in Sunday's shooting. Stephen Romero was at the Gilroy Garlic Festival with his mother and grandmother who are being treated for gunshot wounds at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose. Stephen's mother was reportedly shot in the stomach and hand, and his grandmother in the leg.
CBS News' Janet Shamlian spoke with the boy's father outside the hospital Monday. He wasn't ready to say much, but did call it the worst day of his life.
Police said the shooter entered the grounds through a creek, cutting metal fencing in the back of the festival grounds. There was heavier security at the front of the festival and police shot the suspect within minutes of the shooting. He has been identified as 19-year-old Santino William Legan. There were reports of an accomplice and police are still searching the area.
Several videos emerged on social media, taken by people running from the shooter. Warning: the videos below are difficult to watch.
