CBS News is reporting that as parents across the country look to buy some back-to-school supplies, they are now being confronted by options far more distressing than whether or not their child will like this or that color for their book bags. Guard Dog Security brand backpacks is offering “bullet-resistant” book bags that you can buy online at Office Depot/Office Max, or just by waltzing into stores in Idaho and Washington. According to CBS, the label promises “the bags offer Level IIIA protection, which means they will stop a .44 magnum handgun, but not a high-velocity rifle.” So … even if you buy this for your child, they are unlikely to be able to use it against the heavy artillery our Second Amendment patriots buy every day.
The founder of Guard Dog Security, which makes the bullet-resistant backpacks, told CBS News, “We’re not saying, ‘Buy a backpack, it’ll solve everything,”‘ he said. “We’re saying this will put you in a better position in the case of a school shooting than someone who doesn’t have a bulletproof backpack.” No, you aren’t saying that. You’re saying buy a backpack from us because you are terrified about the domestic terrorism of school shootings.
So, while teachers ask for respectable wages and school budgets continue to be cut, our free market provides by capitalizing on our failure to create and implement meaningful gun safety and public health policies.
