While we celebrate the Independence of the United States, the US still has many people living under a colonial regime: Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands in the Caribbean Sea while on the other side of the world we have Guam, Northen Marianas and American Samoa in the Pacific Ocean. Puerto Rico, a province of Spain turned into a US colony right after the US invasion of the Island in 1898, is the largest one of them all. The United Nations Decolonization Committee last week approved a resolution that called on the United States to promote a process that enables Puerto Rico to exercise its right to self-determination and independence.
