From the NYT press release/article on the story.
The New York Times said in a statement on Tuesday that Jonathan Weisman, a deputy Washington editor of The Times, had been demoted and would no longer oversee the paper’s congressional correspondents because he repeatedly posted messages on social media about race and politics that showed what the paper called “serious lapses in judgment.”
Mr. Weisman, 53, will lose the title of deputy editor, a designation for Times editors with wide-ranging duties and significant input into news coverage, a spokeswoman for the paper said.
Mr. Weisman met with Dean Baquet, the executive editor of The Times, on Tuesday and apologized, the Times statement said. He will also no longer be “active on social media,” the statement added. — www.nytimes.com/...
The former editor tripped himself with this tweet, that he quickly deleted:
By the way, 80% of Michiganders live in an urban area. That’s also the case for the US as a whole. The complete inability to understand this basic fact about the US has led the NY Times and much of our media to compound their many errors in reporting during 2016. It’s why they keep visiting the same suburban bar in Pennsylvania, looking for… something.
In the same moment that Trump was telling these Congresswomen to “go back to where they came from”, this NYT editor was implying they weren’t representative of the Mid-West. And it’s not the first time he’s expressed this sentiment. Here’s something from way back in 2016, which contains a reference to Keith Ellison. That tweet hasn’t been deleted (the article expresses the same sentiment.
Oh, and by the way, that black Muslim from Minneapolis won state-wide office, he’s now Minnesota’s Attorney General:
As if these idiocies weren’t enough, Weisman tried to dismiss Justice Democrats with an ignorant claim.
And if that weren’t dumb enough, he went on...
Last week, Weisman tweeted that the Justice Democrats were backing a candidate "seeking to unseat an African-American Democrat." Weisman seemingly failed to realize the candidate in question was black. Shortly after, Roxane Gay, an author who occasionally writes op-ed pieces for The Times, mocked Weisman for the tweet.
You know what, this fellow is never really going to change his ways:
As Waleed points out, this fellow apologized to the NYT, but has yet to apologize to Rep. Ilhan Omar, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Rep. John Lewis, Roxane Gray or Morgan Harper.
