I think forgiveness involves mood regulation. Many people feel that they won't be disrespected, and this tends to escalate conflict. I read a blog post that said religion was about mood regulation. This makes it more general than science. Science, the scientific method, can regulate your mood. As you investigate your scientific questions you are rewarded when you find stuff out, whether your hypothesis is confirmed or not. With religion you sing and pray and meditate, and attempt to control your behavior. With forgiveness you give up your anger with the transgressor. Society ritualizes various ways of regulating mood, such as sex, drugs, and rock and roll. It's problematic when those ways become viewed as ends in themselves instead of mood regulation. People can usefully practice mood regulation. Mood is susceptible to control though it takes practice. Haidt says reason and emotion are like a rider on an elephant. The elephant is going where it wants and the rider has limited control. But the rider can train the elephant over time so he can get it to do what he wants, at least some of the time. Somehow we have to institute a practice of mood control, like prayer or mindfulness, that will act to counter the hate in our society.
