Donald Trump's knee-jerk first response to the weekend's massacres in El Paso and Dayton—another immigration crackdown and blaming the media—echoed alarmingly for House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler.
The New York Democrat appeared on MSNBC's Morning Joe and said that the shooting in El Paso was "clearly, at least in part, a result of [Trump's] racist rhetoric."
He blasted Trump's suggestion of "marrying" background checks on gun purchases with "desperately needed immigration reform." "What's the connection between background checks and immigration reform?" Nadler asked. "That we have to keep guns out of the hands out of the invading hordes of less-than human people coming across our border? That's the implication." The suggestion "reminds me of the 1930s in Germany."
