I originally joined DailyKos as user number 4602 on December 30, 2003. Needless to say, I haven't posted in forever but I am hoping the DailyKos community can come to my assistance.
In February, I decided to run for the Fairfax County School Board in Northern Virginia. If successful, I will be the first openly LGBTQ+ local elected official in the Commonwealth’s largest county, serving on a board that is routinely attacked by anti-equality extremists.

How bad has it gotten here?
Last night as I was passing out brochures with my campaign volunteers at a back to school event, a Republican volunteer began harassing me, repeatedly yelling, “WHAT DO YOU WANT WITH OUR CHILDREN?!?”
It is a sad statement about the Trumpian tone of our political discourse in 2019 that someone would feel perfectly fine yelling that a gay man running for school board must be doing it because he is a child predator.
My opponent is an anti-equality, anti-choice extremist who has already raised thousands of dollars. She is best known for being so disruptive at a school board committee meeting about making curriculum more LGBTQ+ inclusive, that security threatened to call the police if she did not leave.
Want to know what is truly frightening? If voter turnout is too low on November 5, she could actually win.
To make sure that does not happen, I must raise an additional $6800 to finish funding my voter contact and get out the vote efforts. Every penny matters in a local race like this one. Please consider giving $10, $25 or even $50 -- whatever you can.
If I am fortunate enough to be elected to the school board, I will be a bold voice for my district, fighting for smaller class sizes and fewer trailers, better pay and training for all teachers and staff, responsible fiscal stewardship, a Green New Deal for our schools, and high academic standards. I will work hard to ensure every student has access to the tools they need to succeed--no matter who they are, or where they live, or how much money their parents make.
