Good evening, Kibitzers!
I am told that my immigrant grandma, pictured at center in my avatar, hated fall; this was because her father was a stonemason, and fall meant there would be less work for him and so less money. She and her mom and sisters would have to sew like demons on their piecework to keep the eight kids fed.
By my childhood, my family’s circumstances were very different, so I was free to have fall as my favorite season, as it remains today. I didn’t understand that enormous gift to me then, or even realize there had been one, but I do now.
There are a lot of songs about autumn, and quite a few of them involve September specifically. As a group, they lean toward the melancholy, for which I apologize — there’s no wrestling the winter = death metaphor away from lyricists, apparently. I’ve tried to get some cheerier songs into the mix along with the darker-but-still-good ones.
First of all, this day specifically has its own song, so I’m obligated to include it, although you’ll have to wait until 1:55 in this 6:59 video for the date to come up.
Papa Was a Rolling Stone ~ The Temptations
Some of these videos are really more audio, so I got all arty and boxed them up with fall pictures.
September When It Comes ~ Rosanne Cash & Johnny Cash
All your life, you will be faced with a choice.
You can choose love or hate… I choose love. ~ Johnny Cash
September ~ Earth, Wind & Fire
Try to Remember ~ Jerry Orbach (He was the first to sing this song, as part of the original off-Broadway cast of The Fantasticks in 1960. Law & Order fans may recognize him as Detective Lennie Briscoe.)
Wake Me Up When September Ends ~ Green Day
September in the Rain ~ Dinah Washington
Autumn Leaves ~ Eva Cassidy

Yet a third hurricane season started June 1, and Puerto Rico is still struggling to recover.
It is Day 713 since Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico.
PLEASE FOLLOW Denise Oliver Velez and the SOS Puerto Rico group for the latest news about developments in Puerto Rico and the USVI (diary here regarding the start of another hurricane season). Denise generally collects resonant tweets at the top of her comment threads, as well, and in the APR’s thread most mornings, to make it easy to retweet. If you tweet or FB, please share something about Puerto Rico and USVI regularly.
PUERTO RICO and USVI DISASTER RELIEF DONATION LINKS
The Daily Kos community has its own project: Puerto Rico resident Bobby Neary (newpioneer) leads a small team dedicated to helping a specific rural elder who was left by the storms without power, water, a roof, or any belongings but a moldy mattress. If you like to see concrete results, this is the project for you. See newpioneer’s diaries for ways to help. See this one in particular, and this comment with photos. See also his lovely and heartbreaking poem, and his recent tribute to the island.
