The best antidote to hot takes is hard data, and the January Daily Kos/Civiqs poll is here with your cure. This month’s survey of 1,464 registered voters was conducted online from Jan. 11-14 and reveals that 76% of Americans oppose going to war with Iran. Further, most Americans (51%) disapprove of the Trump administration’s foreign policy decisions.
Other noteworthy findings in this month’s poll include:
- 53% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s job performance as president.
- Only 35% trust Trump and his administration to make good foreign policy decisions.
- Trump would lose the election to a generic Democratic candidate if the presidential election were held today (48-44%).
Additional issues surveyed include which country Americans regard as the United States’ greatest geopolitical threat, attitudes towards Trump’s removal from office, and whether invading Iraq in 2003 was a good idea.
January’s numbers demonstrate unequivocally that Americans strongly oppose escalating hostilities with Iran to the point of war. Further, only 9% of Americans regard Iran as the U.S.’s greatest geopolitical threat. The nation holds a dim view of our last war in the region, as well; a scant 18% of Americans think that invading Iraq in 2003 was a good idea.
This month’s survey also reinforces the fact that frequent Fox News viewers are deeply disconnected from mainstream Americans. While 51% of all Americans disapprove of Trump’s foreign policy decisions, a whopping 92% of faithful Fox viewers approve. And, following the Trump administration’s false assertion that Iran was somehow to blame for the 9/11 attacks, 59% of frequent Fox viewers now believe that Iran was involved in 9/11--along with 58% of Republicans.
