Good morning!
Being brought up by older parents gave me more than a few advantages over some of my friends. We were taught the mantra:
Use it up,
wear it out.
Make it do,
or do without.
Like most people, I got a bit frisky when I started earning decent money, but I never forgot the lessons, and they are so very helpful now that I’m on a ‘fixed’ income.
One of the things I read that helps is One Good Thing which is full of great ideas and how to’s. I especially liked the aritcle about green things our parents/grandparents used to do, that were green when green was just a colour.
A couple of my favourites:
- They dried clothes outside! On clotheslines. For free!! Plus, sunshine is a great disinfectant, whether it’s laundry or legislature!
- They collected rainwater in barrels to use for other things...lawn watering, etc. We sometimes do this now, but could do a whole lot more.
- They cooked at home. From scratch. It isn’t hard, it’s cheaper, it’s more healthy, and it’s fun. You don’t have to go Cordon Bleu...just make what you like, that is in season!
- They played more games. We used to spend hours playing Monopoly and Parcheesi and checkers and chess (for my smarter older cousin!).
- They brown-bagged it for lunch. Eating any other way at work is so expensive! I rarely paid for my lunch, except once a month or so on payday, as a treat. Doing more just drained the budget and meant I was working for less.
