The sad spectacle in our Senate yesterday is all the confirmation we need that all we’re going to get is a show trial. If it hasn’t been clear before, it’s now crystal clear that there is no legal or constitutional process that can save our government from becoming a Trumpian, totalitarian kleptocracy. We the people are all that is left to save us.
We aren’t going to get out of this mess through any of our usual political means, either. All we have left is our raw, unfiltered voices, and our numbers. If we’re going to save our country, it’s going to take massive protests. If a million protesters surrounded the Capitol, do you think all those vulnerable R senators up for re-election won’t notice?
Frankly, I’ve been shocked that we haven’t seen protests in far greater numbers. Maybe it’s the media’s Republican gaze that silences reporting on protests, so it’s hard to build enthusiasm nationally. We’re also a big country and most citizens live far from D.C., so it’s a challenge to organize and get people there. And this is important, we are all enduring significant hardship these days and it would take serious heroics for many of us to find the time, money, and support to make the trip.
So maybe there are some reasons why we haven’t seen the protests we need. But they don’t stand up against the one reason to have them: We the people are all we have left.
I’m not much of a community instigator, but I am here to show my support for doing what is necessary. I’m disabled, autistic, and hate travel and crowds, and live on the West Coast, but I’d fucking drop everything and get myself to D.C. to protest to save my country, our democracy, and our way of life.
How do we make this happen for real? Who can raise the banner and call people to assemble?
People shouldn't be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people. — V
