Pacific Northwest
Our fall colors aren’t as spectacular as other parts of the country, but some things stand out before we transition fully into our fairly monochromatic green/grey of winter.
Rose hips are a splash of bright color. The Baldhip rose hips in the title image are more ephemeral than the Nootka rose hips, which are prolific and grow aggressively in every direction. The other day I thought I was looking at a male woodpecker 25 feet up in a tree...turned out to be rose hips!
Rose thickets are all over. The leaves will fall soon leaving branches, thorns and hips.
Nootka rose hips will persist right through winter. So will Snowberries. Not highly prized by wildlife.
As far as foliage color, the Red alder leaves in my driveway are the most typical color for deciduous trees in the PacificNorthwest: shades of yellow and brown.
Maples are our reddest fall foliage. Vine maple is long since bare branches but the other two are now just starting to turn.
Big leaf maple is one.
Douglas maple is the other, also in mid color change. The pace and hue varies with setting.
The color change in a native Crabapple is currently the ripening fruit, and a young Robin foraging there.
I leave the crabapples for the birds and chippies. I eat apples from trees in my yard. They are done now. I made pie and applesauce.
It’s harvest season in the back yard in general right now. Here’s a colorful one that got away from me this year. I never got around to thinning the carrots, so this is what they did. They also split open the plastic 20-gallon pot I planted them in. We had to turn it upside down, knock the dirt/carrot mass onto the bench and then pry the carrots apart. I duct taped the pot closed and put half the carrots back in the dirt for later in the winter.
🥕
Foggy, with high thick smoke layer aloft. Surface air is moderately smoky. Orange sun this morning. Calm wind. Cool temps, in the 50s.
What’s up in nature in your area today?
