I was in the process of doing the laundry when I got a mysterious message from the vice chair of the county Democratic Party:
Biden visit to Erie
Committee members:
No rally, just a welcome reception. Oliver Rd & Hawthorne Rd at 3:30
|
I got this message around 2:00 PM, and in an hour and a half, Biden was going to be in Erie? How did I not know this before? So hubby and I and a friend humped it up to Erie to be part of the welcoming committee.
As the message said, there was no rally. The venue was a union hall. The arrival occurred more than a half hour behind schedule. Half a dozen black vehicles drove up—no doubt five of them decoys—accompanied by cops on motorcycles and a busload of reporters. There was a sniper on the roof of the building. At no point during this event did we actually see the former Vice President and candidate fr President, unfortunately.
Of course, this being western Pennsylvania, we were not the only ones there to greet the former Vice President. There were about two dozen Trump supports, and, man, were they obnoxious! All of them were massless, of course. They started out at the edges of the main group, but came to the center when Biden had arrived. They made it a point to get into our faces as much as possible. I refused to engage them. Others on our side were not so reticent, getting into voluble arguments. When they started chanting “Four more years!” we chanted in response “Lock him up!’ or “Erie loves Joe!” Our crowd was bigger, so we could drown them out.
The trumpers seemed very cocky in their confidence in their candidate, assured that he would win Pennsylvania. I suppose I should not be surprised at how woefully misinformed they are. Biden currently enjoys a 7 point advantage in Pennsylvania, resting above 50 % in the latest polling. The Trump campaign is out of money, and their candidate has yet to get over his case of COVID-19, and therefore can’t campaign.
After about an hour and a half, the phalanx of black vehicles and their retinue started up and drove away, and everybody went home. We were told that Biden could hear the chants from inside the building. It would have been much better if we had been able to see him and hear him speak, but in these days of COVID-19, you take what you can get.
As it happens, I found a recording of Biden’s speech given a few hours ago in Erie on the CSPAN website. I assume this is essentially his stump speech, though he mentioned issues specific to Erie. If you’re interested, here is a link to it. (I tried to embed, but apparently, CSPAN is not white-listed.)
Now I’m back home and still have the laundry to deal with, not to mention all the other work that needs to be done.
